Living with a Malinois, day after day
Most Malinois problems are lifestyle mismatches. Check yours against the list below.
A realistic day
Morning
Vigorous exercise before the household gets busy: running, structured play or a long, focused walk.
Midday
Mental work. Training games, scent games or puzzle feeding use a Malinois's mind, which tires it as much as its legs.
Evening
Another outing and some calm practice, then a settled evening indoors near you.
Indoors, not out back
Malinois tend to do best living inside with their people. A dog left alone in a yard for long periods is likely to bark, dig, chew or escape. A secure fence is still essential.
Children and other pets
The breed's speed, mouthiness and herding instincts make supervision important around children. Prey drive can make small animals, and sometimes other dogs, a problem. Plan slow introductions and expect to manage the household.
Travel, work and weather
- Long workdays away from home are a poor match.
- The short coat is easy to groom, though it sheds.
- Heat and cold both call for sensible limits on activity.
